LARGE STORES TRADE INDEX OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY (ICGS) OCTOBER 2011



Sales at large stores in the Basque Country fell by 3.5% in October 2011



Sales of food products registered a year-on-year rise of 3.3% and other products were down by 7.1%



Sales registered in the large stores of the Basque Country in October 2011 experienced a nominal year-on-year downturn of 3.5% in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Sales of food products at large stores reflected a nominal year-on-year fall of 3.3%, whilst sales corresponding to other items were down by 7.1%.


By territory, in Araba/Álava there was a nominal year-on-year drop in sales of 4.9%, in Bizkaia there was a drop of 4.4% and Gipuzkoa witnessed a fall of 1.0%.


With respect to the previous month, September 2011, sales for the Basque Country as a whole rose by 1.8% in nominal terms, once seasonal effects had been eliminated. Sales of food products rose by 3.2% compared to the previous month, while sales of other products also performed positively, up 1.1%.


By provinces, in relation to September, there was a rise in sales in the three provinces: in Bizkaia they were up 2.4%, in Gipuzkoa they rose 1.6% and in Araba/Álava there was an increase of 0.3%.

In constant terms, sales at large stores in the Basque Country registered a 6.6% year-on-year decrease and a 1.4% rise in comparison to the previous month.


Compared to October 2010, sales of food products fell by 0.3%, whilst those of other products were down by 9.7% in constant euros. Territorial performance evidenced a downturn in all three provinces: Araba/Álava fell by 7.9%, Bizkaia by 7.5% and Gipuzkoa dropped 4.2%, in constant terms.


Compared to the previous month, food product sales, once the price effect had been discounted, rose by 2.7% compared to September 2011 and the other products rose by 0.8%.


By province, there was a drop of 0.1% in Araba/Álava, in Bizkaia there was a rise of 2.0%, whilst in Gipuzkoa there was a rise of 1.2%, in real terms.


The number of personnel employed in large store establishments rose by 0.7% in October 2011, compared to September 2011, once adjusted for seasonal effects, and the positive fluctuation was felt in all three provinces: there was growth of 0.4% in both Araba/Álava and a rise of 1.6% in Gipuzkoa.
