DOMESTIC TRADE INDEX OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY (ICI) 3rd quarter of 2011


Retail sector sales rose by 3.0% in the Basque Country in the third quarter of 2011


Wholesale sales were up by 4.8% while retail sales grew by 0.3%



The retail trade sector of the Basque Country registered a 3.0% rise in nominal sales in the third quarter of 2011 with regard to the same period of the previous year, according to Eustat data.


With respect to the previous quarter, there was no change in the sales index (0.0%), once any seasonal effects had been eliminated.

By sectors, wholesale trade sector of the Basque Country saw a rise of 4.8% in nominal sales in the third quarter of 2011, while retail sales were up 0.3% with respect to the same period of 2010.


There was an increase in wholesale trade for all considered sectors. The Machinery and Equipment sector grew by 8.1%, Semi-finished Products & Scrap rose by 7.0%, Agriculture & Food products saw a 5.1% increase and Non-food Consumer Products posted growth of 1.3%.


By Provinces, the highest overall growth in nominal sales in the commercial sector as a whole in the third quarter of 2011 was in Araba/Álava, with a 4.7% year-on-year increase; Gipuzkoa increased its nominal sales by 3.0% and those in Bizkaia rose by 2.5%.


In real terms, domestic trade sales fell by 1.1% in the third quarter after eliminating the price effect


In wholesale trade, sales increased by 0.1%, whilst in retail trade there was a drop of 2.7%, with respect to the same quarter of 2010 and constant prices.


Year-on-year performances varied within the wholesale trade sector: sales of Machinery and Equipment grew 6.6%, agricultural and food products by 2.2%, Non-food Consumer Products posted growth of 1.5%, whilst there were negative results for Semi-finished Products & Scrap, which decreased by 2.2% in real terms.


With regard to retail trade, specialised retail sales fell by 3.1% and non-specialised retail sales by 2.3%, in constant euros.


The number of people employed in the retail trade sector in the Basque Country overall in the third quarter of 2011 was down by 0.2% on the second quarter of 2011.
