LARGE STORES TRADE INDEX OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY (ICGS) SEPTEMBER 2011
Sales at large stores in the Basque Country fell by 3.2% in September 2011
Sales of food products registered a year-on-year fall of 0.6% and other products were down by 4.5%
Sales registered in the large stores in the Basque Country in September 2011 experienced a nominal year-on-year downturn of 3.2% in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Sales of food products at large stores reflected a nominal year-on-year fall of 0.6%, whilst other items were down by 4.5%.
By territory, in Araba/Álava there was a nominal year-on-year fall of 5.1%, whilst Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa both witnessed drops of 2.8%.
With respect to the previous month, August 2011, sales for the Basque Country as a whole fell by 0.7% in nominal terms, once seasonal effects had been eliminated. Sales of food products rose by 0.1% compared to the previous month, whilst sales of other products performed negatively, down 1.1%.
By territory, and in relation to August, there was a rise in sales of 0.6% in Gipuzkoa, whilst in Araba/Álava and Bizkaia there were drops of 2.2% and 1.0% respectively.
In constant terms, sales at large stores in the Basque Country registered a 6.2% year-on-year decrease and a 1.1% fall in comparison to the previous month.
Compared to September 2010, sales of food products fell by 3.8%, whilst those of other products were down by 7.3% in constant euros. Territorial performance evidenced a downturn in all three provinces: Araba/Álava fell by 8.0%, Bizkaia by 5.8% and Gipuzkoa dropped 5.9%, in constant terms.
Compared to the previous month, food product sales, once the price effect had been discounted, fell by 0.6% compared to August 2011 and those of other products saw a reduction of 1.4%.
By territory, there were drops of 2.5% in Araba/Álava and 1.5%in Bizkaia, whilst in Gipuzkoa there was of 0.1%, in real terms.
Personnel employed in large stores fell by 0.2% in September 2011 with respect to August 2011, in deseasonalised terms, with Bizkaia experiencing a positive variation, with a rise of 0.3%, whereas both Araba/Álava and Gipuzkoa experienced falls of 0.3% and 0.9%, respectively.
