Sales at large stores in the Basque Country fell by 2.9% in July 2011
Sales of food products registered a year-on-year fall of 0.1% and other products were down by 4.2%
Sales registered in large stores in the Basque Country in July 2011 experienced a nominal year-on-year downturn of 2.9% in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Sales of food products at large stores reflected a nominal year-on-year fall of 0.1%, whilst other items were down by 4.2%.
By territory, in Araba/Álava there was a nominal year-on-year fall of 5.5%, in Bizkaia there was a drop of 1.6% and Gipuzkoa witnessed a fall of 4.0%.
With respect to the previous month, June 2011, sales for the Basque Country as a whole fell by 1.7% in nominal terms, once seasonal effects had been eliminated. Sales of food products dropped by 3.0% compared to the previous month, whilst sales of other products also performed negatively, down 0.9%.
By provinces, and compared to June, there were falls in the three provinces: in Gipuzkoa sales dropped by 3.3%, in Araba/Álava they fell 1.8% and in Bizkaia 0.8%.
In constant terms, sales at large stores in the Basque Country registered a 5.8% year-on-year decrease and a 1.8% fall in comparison to the previous month.
Compared to July 2010, sales of food products fell by 3.2%, whilst those of other products were down by 6.9% in constant euros. Territorial performance evidenced a downturn in all three provinces: Araba/Álava fell by 8.4%, Gipuzkoa by 6.9% and Bizkaia dropped 4.5%, in constant terms.
Compared to the previous month, food product sales, once the price effect had been discounted, fell by 3.4% compared to June 2011 and those of other products saw a reduction of 1.0%.
By territory, Gipuzkoa registered a decrease of 3.3%, in Araba/Álava the fall was 2.2% and Bizkaia witnessed a drop of 0.9%, in real terms.
Personnel employed in large stores fell by 0.4% in July 2011 with respect to June 2011, in deseasonalised terms, with Gipuzkoa experiencing a positive variation, with a rise of 0.3%, whereas both Araba/Álava and Bizkaia experienced falls of 1.7% and 0.4%, respectively.
