LARGE STORES TRADE INDEX OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY (ICGS) AUGUST 2011
Sales at large stores in the Basque Country fell by 1.1% in August 2011
Sales of food products registered a year-on-year fall of 1.5% and other products were down by 2.4%
Sales registered in the large stores of the Basque Country in August 2011 experienced a nominal year-on-year downturn of 1.1% in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Sales of food products reflect a nominal year-on-year rise of 1.5%, whilst other items were down by 2.4%.
By territory, in Araba/Álava there was a nominal year-on-year fall of 1.5%, in Bizkaia there was a descent of 0.7% and Gipuzkoa witnessed a fall of 1.6%.
With regards to the previous month, July 2011, sales for the Basque Country as a whole fell by 0.2% in nominal terms, once seasonal effects had been eliminated. Sales of food products dropped by 0.4% compared to the previous month, whilst sales of other products also performed negatively, down 0.1%.
By territory, in relation to July, Álava witnessed a rise in sales of 1.8%; Gipuzkoa experienced no variation (0.0%) and Bizkaia evidenced a fall of 0.8%.
In constant terms, sales at large stores in the Basque Country registered a 4.0% year-on-year decrease and a 0.2% fall in comparison to the previous month.
Compared to August 2010, sales of food products fell by 1.4%, whilst sales for other products were down by 5.2% in constant euros. Territorial performance evidenced a downturn in all three provinces: Álava and Gipuzkoa fell by 4.4%, in each case, and Bizkaia witnessed a descent of 3.6%, in constant terms.
Compared to the previous month, food product sales, once the price effect had been discounted, fell by 0.3% compared to July 2011 and sales of other products evidenced a reduction of 0.1%.
By territory, Álava registered a rise of 1.7%, in Gipuzkoa practically the same results as the previous month were produced (0.0%), whilst Bizkaia witnessed a descent of 0.8%, in real terms.
Personnel employed in large stores fell by 0.6% in August 2011 with respect to July 2011, in deseasonalised terms, whilst Álava experienced a positive variation, with growth of 1.2%, whereas both Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa experienced falls of 0.1% and 2.4%, respectively.
