DOMESTIC TRADE INDEX OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY (ICI) 2nd quarter of 2011


Commercial sector sales rose by 0.7% in the Basque Country in the second quarter of 2011


Wholesale sales were up by 1.4% while retail sales fell by 0.4%


The commercial sector of the Basque Country registered a 0.7% rise in nominal sales in the second quarter of 2011 with regard to the same period of the previous year, according to data provided by Eustat.


With respect to the previous quarter, the sales index was down a nominal 2.5%, once any seasonal effects had been eliminated.

By sectors, there was a rise of 1.4% in nominal wholesale sales in the second quarter of 2011, while retail sales fell by 0.4% with respect to the same period of 2010.


Within the wholesale trade sector, the performance of the Agriculture & Food Products sector was particularly noteworthy, posting nominal growth of 5.7%. The Semi-finished Products & Scrap and Machinery & Equipment sectors also grew, posting rises of 1.9% and 0.4%, respectively. However, the Non-food Products sector experienced a drop in nominal sales of 4.6%.


In the retail trade sector, specialised trade sales were down by 1.4%, whilst non-specialised retail trade sales rose by 1.5%.


By Provinces, the highest overall growth in nominal sales in the commercial sector as a whole in the second quarter of 2011 was in Álava, with a 3.3% year-on-year increase; Gipuzkoa increased its nominal sales by 0.7% and those in Bizkaia remained unchanged (0.0%).

In real terms, domestic trade sales fell by 4.3% in the second quarter, after the price effect was eliminated


In wholesale trade, sales reduced by 4.7%, whilst retail trade fell by 3.5%, with respect to the same quarter of 2010 and at constant prices.


Year-on-year performances varied within the wholesale trade sector: sales of Agriculture & Food Products rose 0.2%; in contrast, Semi-finished Products & Scrap fell by 8.9%, sales of Non-food Products by 4.7% and in the Machinery & Equipment sector sales dropped by 2.8%, all in real terms.


With regard to retail trade, specialised retail sales fell by 4.7 % and non-specialised retail sales by 1.0%, in constant euros.


The number of people employed in the retail trade sector in the Basque Country overall in the second quarter of 2011 was down by 0.3% on the first quarter of 2011.
