Sales at large stores in the Basque Country fell by 2.8% in June 2011
Sales of food products registered a year-on-year fall of 3.7% and other products were down by 6.2%
Sales registered in the large stores of the Basque Country in June 2011 experienced a nominal year-on-year downturn of 2.8% in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Sales of food products at large stores reflected a nominal year-on-year increase of 3.7%, whilst other items were down by 6.2%.
By territory, in Araba/Álava there was a nominal year-on-year fall of 4.1%, in Bizkaia there was a drop of 5.0% and Gipuzkoa witnessed a rise of 2.1%.
With respect to the previous month, May 2011, sales for the Basque Country as a whole rose by 0.3% in nominal terms, once seasonal effects had been eliminated. Sales of food products rose by 2.3% compared to the previous month, whilst sales of other products performed negatively, down 0.8%.
By territory, with regards to May, there was a 2.4% rise in Gipuzkoa whilst Araba/Álava and Bizkaia witnessed falls of 0.1% and 0.7% respectively.
In constant terms, sales at large stores in the Basque Country registered a 5.8% year-on-year decrease and a 0.5% upturn in comparison to the previous month.
Compared to June 2010, sales of food products rose by 1.1%, whilst other products were down by 9.1% in constant euros. Territorial performance evidenced a downturn in all three provinces: Bizkaia fell by 7.9%, Araba/Álava by 6.9% and Gipuzkoa dropped 1.0%, in constant terms.
Compared to the previous month, food product sales, once the price effect had been discounted, rose by 2.6% compared to May 2011 and those of other products saw a reduction of 0.6%.
By territory, Bizkaia registered a fall of 0.5%, but Gipuzkoa witnessed an increase of 2.4% and in Araba/Álava there was a rise of 0.1%, in real terms.
Personnel employed in large stores rose by 0.5% in June 2011 with respect to May 2011, in deseasonalised terms, and there were positive variations in Gipuzkoa, with a rise of 2.3% and in Bizkaia, with an increase of 0.1%, whilst Araba/Álava registered a drop of 1.3%.
