LARGE STORES TRADE INDEX OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY (ICGS) MAY 2011
Sales at large stores in the Basque Country fell by 1.8% in May 2011
Sales of food products registered a year-on-year rise of 0.3% and other products were down by 3.0%
Sales registered in the large stores of the Basque Country in May 2011 experienced a nominal year-on-year downturn of 1.8% in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Sales of food products in the Basque Country registered a nominal year-on-year increase of 0.3%, while sales of other products fell by 0.3%.
By province, there was a nominal decrease in year-on-year sales in Álava, down 1.8%, while they fell by 1.1% and 3.2% in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, respectively.
With respect to the previous month, April 2011, sales for the Basque Country as a whole fell by 1.1% in nominal terms and once seasonal effects had been eliminated. Sales of food products were up by 1.1% on the previous month, while sales of other products also performed negatively, down 2.3%.
By provinces, and compared to April, there was a slight increase in Bizkaia (0.2%), while they fell by 2.6% and 2.9% in Álava and Gipuzkoa, respectively.
In constant terms, sales at large stores in the Basque Country registered a 5.3% year-on-year decrease and a 1.2% downturn on the previous month.
Compared to May 2010, sales of food products fell by 3.7%, while those of other products were down by 6.1% in constant euros. The performance of the provinces showed a downturn for the three provinces: sales were down by 6.6% in Gipuzkoa, 5.3% in Álava and by 4.6% in Bizkaia, in constant terms.
Compared to the previous month, food product sales, once the price effect had been discounted, rose by 0.6% compared to April 2011 and the other products were down by 2.0%.
By provinces, there was a 0.2% increase in Bizkaia, but Gipuzkoa fell by 3.1%, while there was a 2.5% downturn in Álava, in real terms.
The number of people employed in large stores fell by 0.2% in May 2011 with respect to April 2011, once adjusted for seasonal effects. Gipuzkoa posted a positive variation, down by 0.6%, while the number employed fell by 0.8% and 0.4% in Álava and Bizkaia, respectively.
