LARGE STORES TRADE INDEX OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY (ICGS) APRIL 2011
Sales at large stores in the Basque Country rose by 0.4% in April 2011
Sales of food products registered a year-on-year rise of 0.5% and other products were up by 0.4%
Sales registered in the large stores of the Basque Country in April 2011 experienced a nominal year-on-year upturn of 0.4% in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Sales of food products in the Basque Country registered a nominal year-on-year increase of 0.5%, while sales of other products rose by 21.4%.
By province, there was a nominal increase in year-on-year sales in Álava, up 2.5%, while they fell by 0.3% in Bizkaia and rose by 0.7% in Gipuzkoa.
With respect to the previous month, March 2011, sales for the Basque Country as a whole rose by 5.0% in nominal terms and once seasonal effects had been eliminated. Sales of food products rose by 0.2% compared to the previous month, while other products also performed positively, up 7.7%.
With respect to March, sales were up in the three provinces: They rose by 3,2% in Álava, by 5,0% in Bizkaia and by 5,1% in Gipuzkoa.
In constant terms, sales at the large stores of the Basque Country registered a 3.4% year-on-year decrease and a 4.8% upturn on the previous month.
Compared to April 2010, sales of food products fell by 3.3%, while those of other products were down by 3.4% in constant euros. The performance of the provinces showed a downturn for the three provinces: sales were down by 4.0% in Bizkaia, 3.1% in Gipuzkoa and by 1.3% in Álava, in constant terms.
Compared to the previous month, food product sales, once the price effect had been discounted, rose by 0.1% compared to March 2011 and the other products rose by 7.4%.
By provinces, there was a 2.9% increase in Álava, Bizkaia rose by 4.7%, while there was a 5.0% upturn in Gipuzkoa, in real terms.
The number of personnel employed in large store establishments rose by 0.7% in April 2011 with respect to March 2011, once adjusted for seasonal effects. The variation was positive in the three provinces: It rose by 1.4% in Álava, 0.9% in Gipuzkoa and 0.5% in Bizkaia.
