INDUSTRIAL PRICE INDEX OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY (IPRI) APRIL 2011


Industrial prices rose by 0.2% in April 2011 compared to the previous month


The increase was 9% on the previous year


Industrial prices in the Basque Country rose by 0.2% in April 2011 compared to the previous month, according to EUSTAT data. The year-on-year rate for April, which indicates the fluctuation in industrial prices over the last twelve months, therefore showed growth to be 9.0%

A more detailed sectorial analysis shows that the most inflationary branches in April 2011, with regard to the previous month, were “Coke Plants and Oil Refining” (2.3%), followed by the “Chemical Industry” (1.1%). On the other hand, the sectors that posted decreases in their prices were “Food, Beverages & Tobacco” (-1.9%), “Extraction Industries” (-1.4%) and “Manufacturing Transport Material" (-0.5%).


During the year-on-year period, April 2011 on April 2010, the highest price rises were recorded by “Electricity, Gas & Steam" (26.7%) “Coke Plants & Oil Refining” (23.2%), “Metallurgy and Metal Products” (9.1%) and “Food, Beverages & Tobacco” (6.4%). On the other hand, prices fell in "Extraction Industries" (-6.8%) and "Pharmaceutical Products" (-0.9%).


According to the Classification of Goods by Economic Destination, and in relation to the previous month, the only sector to register an increase in its prices was Energy, up 1.2%. The prices of Capital Goods fell by 0.3%, Consumer Goods overall fell by 0.1% in price, due to the downturn posted by Consumer Non-Durables (-0.1%), as Consumer Durables remained unchanged (0.0%). The prices of Capital Goods did not vary (0.0%).


The price evolution of these large groups of goods also increased in all cases over the year-on-year period. Energy prices increased by 24.7%, Intermediate Goods by 8.2%, Capital Goods were up 1.7% and Consumer Goods registered a 2.4% increase. Among the latter, the prices of Consumer Non-Durables rose 3.1% while Consumer Durables were up by 0.4%.
