DOMESTIC TRADE INDEX OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY (ICI) 2nd quarter 2010
Retail trade sector sales rose by 8.4% in the Basque Country in the second quarter of 2010
Wholesale sales were up by 12.8% and retail sales by 1.8%
The retail trade sector of the Basque Country registered an 8.4% rise in nominal sales in the second quarter of 2010 with regard to the same period of the previous year, according to Eustat data.
With respect to the previous quarter, the sales index increased by a nominal 0.8%, once any seasonal effects had been eliminated.
By sectors, wholesale trade nominal sales rose by 12.8% in the second quarter of 2010, while retail trade was up by 1.8% during the same period of 2009.
Within the wholesale trade sector, the performance of the Semi-finished Products and Scraps sector was particularly noteworthy as it posted nominal growth of 33.5%. The Non-food Consumer Products and Machinery & Equipment sectors also grew, and were up by 4.8% and 1.1%, respectively. However, the nominal sales of the sector that included the wholesale trade of Farming and Food Products were down by 3.8%.
In the retail trade sector, specialised trade sales were up by 3.5%, which non-specialised retail trade sales fell by 2.0%.
By Provinces, the highest growth in retail sector nominal sales, in the second quarter of 2010, was in Álava, with a 13.0% year-on-year increase. Gipuzkoa increased its nominal saes by 11.7% and Bizkaia by 5.4%.
In real terms, domestic trade sales rose by 5.4% in the second quarter after eliminating the price effect.
The rise in wholesale trade stood at 8.9%, which retail trade fell by 0.2%, with respect to the same quarter of 2009 and in constant prices.
Year-on-year performances varied within the wholesale trade: the sales of Semi-finished Products and Scrap rose by 22.5%, Non-Food Consumer Products posted positive real growth of 6.1% and Machinery and Equipment rose by 0.3%. However, Faming and Food Products fell by 1.4%, all in real terms.
With regard to retail trade, specialised retail sales rose by 0.8% and non-specialised ones were down by 2.4%, in constant euros.
The number of people employed in the retail trade sector in the Basque Country overall in the second quarter of 2010 was up by 0.3% on the first quarter of 2010.
