LARGE STORES TRADE INDEX OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY (ICGS) JUNE 2010
Sales at large stores in the Basque Country were up by 0.1% in June 2010
Sales of food products registered a year-on-year fall of 3.6% and other products were up by 2.1%
Registered sales in the large stores of the Basque Country in June 2010 experienced a nominal year-on-year increase of 0.1% in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Sales of product products at large stores fell by a nominal year-on-year 3.6%, while the rest of the items rose by 2.1%.
By provinces, the nominal year-on-year increase in sales occurred in Bizkaia, where sales were up by 1.0%, and Gipuzkoa, with a 0.6% increase. However, sales fell by 4.0% in Álava
With respect to the previous month, May 2010, sales for the Basque Country overall were up by 1.5% in nominal terms. Sales of food products rose by 0.1% compared to the previous month, while other products increased by 2.3%. The provinces of Álava and Bizkaia registered increases of 2.7% and 3.2%, respectively, in terms of nominal sales, which Gipuzkoa posted a decrease of 2.0%.
In constant terms, sales at large stores in the Basque Country registered a 1.1% year-on-year decrease and a 1.5% increase on the previous month.
Compared to June 2009, sales of food products fell by 4.4%, while other products rose by 0.5% in constant euros. The performance of the provinces showed an overall downturn. There was a 5.3% drop in constant terms in Álava, and decreases of 0.2% and 0.7% were recorded in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, respectively.
Compared to the previous month, food product sales, once the price effect had been discounted, fell by 0.5% compared to May 2010 and the other products rose by 2.5%. By provinces, there was a 2.6% increase in Álava, Bizkaia rose by 3.2%, in real terms, while there was a 2.1% downturn in Gipuzkoa.
The number of people employed in large stores fell by 0.4% in June 2010 with respect to May once adjusted for seasonal effects. Gipuzkoa recorded a negative variation, down by 2.5%, it rose in Álava and Bizkaia by 1.0% and 0.3%, respectively.
